Abydos temple courtyard
10 min · July 2026
Abydos was pilgrimage before tourism — Seti I's temple preserves a king list that Egyptologists treat as scripture and visitors can feel as poetry in stone.
Enter through the first pylon into courtyards that empty of crowd if you arrive early. Hypostyle halls here are finely cut — low light demands patient eyes. The Osireion nearby is separate mood: massive, damp, mythic.
King list wall
Cartouches in sequence — find gaps where history argued with itself. Guides worth reading once; then look without narration to let cartouche rhythm register visually.
Combine
Pair with Dendera on a middle Egypt day only if driving time already budgeted — do not rush either.
