Colossi of Memnon at dawn
8 min · July 2026
The two seated Amenhotep III colossi are a roadside monument — which means they are easy to dismiss and foolish to skip at first light.
Before 7:30 the west bank belongs to birds and soft stone shadow. Buses have not yet parked; you can walk the plinth circumference and read earthquake repairs in Roman masonry patches.
Singing stone legend
Ancient visitors reported dawn "singing" from cracked quartzite — temperature change through fissures. The romance survives even if acoustics no longer perform.
Stop length
Twenty minutes suffices — this sketch is prelude to valley tombs, not replacement.
